Get a few 'STEPS' ahead with CQU

Central Queensland University has places available for its full-time and part-time evening STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies) programs in Rockhampton beginning in March.

STEPS is a practical pathway to higher education providing mature-age students with the necessary skills to succeed at university.

PhotoID:1316 STEPS Coordinator in Rockhampton Julie Willans said innovation and practicality were the essence of the program.

“The 18-year-old STEPS program has had a proven history of giving people from many walks of life the opportunity to embark on and successfully complete their university studies,” Ms Willans said.

The program is a 13-week full-time or 26-week part-time program available at CQU’s Central Queensland campuses in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay, Bundaberg and Emerald.

The program provides teaching in language and learning, mathematics, computing for academic assignment writing and preparatory studies.

Applicants must be least 19-years-old and be Australian citizens or permanent residents. Applicants are also required to complete an entrance test to demonstrate their current language and mathematics skills.

The next testing and information session will take place in Rockhampton on Monday February 16th. Orientation sessions will follow on February 20 and 21.

A great majority of students who have completed the STEPS program have applied to and gained entrance to CQU and gone on to successfully complete a degree.

“When provided with an opportunity to return to study, many adults avail themselves of it in their quest to achieve what may have once seemed to be out of reach,” Ms Willans said.

“It is encouraging to see the hundreds of people of all ages graduating from our STEPS program each year – giving people a chance of a rewarding career.”.
