Students selected for Australian University league team

Five Central Queensland University students have been selected to represent Australia in University Rugby League after they helped Queensland to victories over New South Wales at the Australian University championships.

Matches were played at open and colts level (under-20), with Queensland winning both encounters.

PhotoID:853 In the open match, Queensland overcame a spirited start from the New South Wales team to run in eight tries and win 48 – 6. CQU students Guy Williams, Ben Bourke and Gerard Parle were among the point scorers with Williams and Bourke scoring a try and Parle slotting 6 conversions.

The students helped Queensland to the biggest winning margin in the history of University Inter State games and continued the maroons' winning streak over the blues, which extends back to 1993.

The victory paved the way for four CQU students to be selected in the Australian open side. Rockhampton’s Guy Williams and Gerard Parle along with former Rockhampton player Ben Bourke, and Bundaberg’s Rowan Graham will all have the chance to represent their country against Great Britain in July.

Joining them will be another Rockhampton student, Glen Egan, who scored a try and gained Australian selection in the Colts (under-20) team after Queensland defeated New South Wales 20-10, in the first University interstate match played at the under 20 level. Other CQU Students who helped both Queensland teams to victory included Todd Brandon (open), Joe O’Callaghan, with Chris Fleming (under 20) restricted due to a leg injury. Australia will take on a touring Great Britain side in two tests, the first at Brisbane on July 15 with the second at Coffs Harbour on July 19.
