Sponsors had generously provided $2400 prize money which included the bookshop's $500 book voucher for the inaugural David Myers Award.

Vice-Chancellor John Rickard, in his earlier address, paid homage to Professor Myers' work as founding director of the CQU Press and initiator of Idiom 23 Literary Magazine, back in 1987 - 20 years ago.

Over 300 entries were received from throughout Australia.

First and second prizes in Open Story went to Nigel Turvey, Darwin, NT and David Campbell of Beaumaris, Victoria.

Outstanding young writer Mark Lord, of Rockhampton, won both Secondary Student story and poetry awards.

Regional writers were highly commended throughout the competition.

These writers included Isabel Hoch and Troy Holland, (Rockhampton) Lyn Oliver, (Yeppoon) Bronwyn Roper (Gladstone) R.J. Anderson (Tannum Sands) and Irene Wilkie (Bangalee), while Margaret Finger of Clermont took first prize in the regional story section, and Jan Sullivan of Bundaberg won regional poetry award and was highly commended in open story, open poetry, and regional story categories.

All winning entries will be published in this year's volume of Idiom 23, celebrating 20 years. The magazine will be sold at CQU Press, CQU Bookshop and The Yellow Door, Yeppoon. Volume 19 will be launched in November.

To celebrate 20 years, Idiom 23 will also launch its new website this month - and looks forward to a stimulating workshop in Byfield Rainforest between September 7-9. A highlight of this weekend will be the Saturday workshop when local Capricorn Coast artists -  sculptors, textile workers, painters - will join potential authors in a special interaction between artistic writing and art objects. This will lead to an exhibition next year on the coast.
