Baptism in jazz a revelation for student drummer

Regional Queenslander Alex Nesevski has been able to gain a baptism in American jazz, complete with immersion in gospel music and sermons from the most-righteous high priests of the movement - Chick, Bobby, Jack and John.

Thanks to a student exchange arranged through Central Queensland University, his journey to the University of Louisville Jazz School was replete with learning experiences.

Among his inspirations in Kentucky were Jack De Johnette, regarded as one of jazz music's greatest drummers, and composer/pianist Chick Corea. Both were around for Miles Davis' seminal Bitches Brew recording in the late 1960s. Another mentor John LaBarbera was a trumpet player and arranger in the great Buddy Rich Orchestra, and Bobby McFerrin (don't worry, he's happy) is a composer and conductor as well as a renowned vocalist.

The UofL experience is centred on ensuring students understand the link between improvised jazz solos and the soul-revealing cascades of gospel singing, so Alex was honoured to spend time in an evangelical church (especially since he himself is a member of the Assembly of God Church back in Australia).

Another great opportunity which had less to do with jazz but plenty to do with fun was playing in the UoL marching band at several gigs, including the famous Kentucky Derby.

Alex was impressed that band members were closer to the horses than the millionaires and billionaires in the luxury trackside suites.

The visitor had another moment in the limelight - inadvertently - when he instigated a scare-mask raid on the UoL music rooms, and ensured the video ended up on YouTube. The University has since secured the OK to use the funny footage in Orientation videos.

Alex is currently in his home town of Gladstone, waiting to attend his final term in the jazz program at CQU's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Mackay, in the second half of this year.

"CQU gave me an amazing opportunity and really helped me broaden my horizons and experience a whole new world of music," he said.

"The school of music offers an amazing program and my jazz drum-set teacher has really helped me further my musical development.

"I have gained much knowledge from this trip and regard it as a major milestone in my life, not only in my education, but also in the growth of myself as a person".
