Past rugby players to recall footy fever

CQU’s long association with the code of rugby union will be celebrated with a reunion of the club’s past players in Rockhampton from April 15 to 17.

About 200 former players are being tracked down to attend the events which includes a CQU/Colts match, a “Night to Remember” at the Birdcage Bar on-campus, a tour of the local watering holes and a barbecue lunch and old boys match at Rugby Park.

The CQU Rugby Union Club began when the current university was known as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Capricornia) back in 1970. The club was started by rugby union enthusiast Randal Alick who recruited students to the team from the engineering and commerce departments for the first three years.

Organiser for this year’s reunion Gary Flower said the club would recruit new members who would stay about three to four years while they were studying before settling into their new careers across the country.

“We have former players throughout the country, marketing managers of national food brands, QANTAS pilots, school principals, managers of power stations and the list goes on,” Mr Flower explained.

“We are keen to find out what all the players have been doing since leaving the team and CQU.”.

If you are a former player and would like further information about the reunion contact Gary on 49285933, after hours on 4933 4371 or on email gf218759@bigpond.net.au.
