Advanced nurses can save lives, say presenters

Presenters at a health conference in Mackay will explore ways that advanced nurses can save more lives during medical emergencies in regional areas.
One Central Queensland University presentation reports perceptions that in regional Queensland hospitals without 24-hour on-site medical coverage in critical care units, a new advanced nursing practice role is needed to achieve the goal of early treatment for complications.
A new advanced role would provide recognition and legal sanction for critical care nurses who have already expanded their practice to advanced levels and enable further expansion of practices.
Another CQU presentation indicates that implementation of a Medical Emergency Team involving advanced training of nursing and medical staff at Rockhampton Hospital has reduced fatalities due to respiratory and cardiac arrest within the hospital.
The Mackay Health Service District, Nursing Division Conference will be held on October 31 and November 1 at the Southern Suburbs Football Club, Mackay.
