CQUniversity boosts support for The Smith Family

CQUniversity has announced it will enhance its engagement with The Smith Family by providing further financial assistance to the Mackay and Rockhampton communities.

As a part of the University's commitment to helping disadvantaged students, it will boost funding of The Smith Family's suite of education programs to $216,000 over three years.

This additional assistance has been warmly received by The Smith Family, an organisation dedicated to unlocking opportunities for disadvantaged children.

The Learning for Life program provides assistance at key transition points throughout their education and beyond, providing access to a host of education support programs including career mentoring and tutoring.

From 2011, CQUniversity will also offer disadvantaged students support to help them achieve their educational ambitions through free career planning seminars, assistance with entry, a guaranteed $2000 scholarship or a free laptop in their first year of study, and a $250 textbook voucher.

Outreach coordinator Stacey Doyle said that finances can negatively impact on people's aspirations, but the University hopes students can realise their potential with assistance.

"The University hopes its contribution to The Smith Family as well as its other outreach programs will encourage financially disadvantaged students to realise that university study and careers are achievable goals."

In recognition of the University's support, The Smith Family's Cevall Johnstone recently presented CQUniversity's Student Support Centre Manager Mary McLeod and Outreach Coordinator Stacey Doyle with a beautiful framed display of two children's artwork.

Ms Johnstone thanked the University saying, "The partnership we have with CQUniversity is of immeasurable value and we are delighted that the University is extending its commitment. This funding will ensure that more children in the community can receive the essential support they need to make the most of their education and realise their full potential".
