French students sample Aussie wildlife

French students Ophelie Beets and Charlotte Baudry have been sampling wildlife on a 3-month visit hosted by CQU's Centre for Environmental Management.
The pair, who are at the French equivalent of Master's level, are completing a research internship for their programs at ENSAR, l'Ecole Nationale Supirieure Agronomique de Rennes (the National Higher Agronomic School at Rennes).
They recently spent 2 weeks on St Bee's Island, off Mackay, with CQU's Dr Alistair Melzer, American PhD candidate Stephanie Januchowski and a group of Earthwatch volunteers.
The French visitors monitored koalas and gathered data and faecal samples to gauge the impact on koala habitat from swamp wallabies. They have also spent 24-hours monitoring koalas' behavioural patterns at Rockhampton Zoo.
Now the fieldwork is over, they are collating data and analysing samples (some with the help of the EPA ).
Ophelie and Charlotte made contact with CQU after a previous ENSAR student - Meriem Khadiri - spent time with the Centre for Environmental Management.
