IT students given 'the edge'

In the competitive job-seeking world, Central Queensland University Information Technology students are being given ‘the edge’ at free workshops designed to help them into their career of choice.

The workshops, entitled ‘Maximising Your Chances’, are being held at CQU campuses in Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg during September for all students studying information technology.

The workshops will focus on a variety of industry specific topics including the current IT marketplace, how organisations recruit graduates, the application process - from resumes to interviews, and selling yourself online.

Manager of CQU’s Careers Service, Robyn Kennedy, said the workshops are essential to any information technology students nearing completion of their degree. “Not only will students find out how to identify employment opportunities, but they will also gain skills to help them perform better in interviews and ‘sell themselves’,” she said.

The workshops are being run by Graduate Programs Australia in conjunction with the Australian Computer Society who are committed to enhancing employment opportunities for information technology graduates.

“This practical, usable and industry specific assistance is more important to graduates than ever with new and emerging technologies changing the way organisations recruit, an increase in the use of recruitment agencies and the advent of the Internet as one of the most powerful business tools of the century”, according to Brandon Thompson, Managing Director of Graduate Programs Australia.

Information Technology students wishing to attend the workshops should contact Olivia Watts on 4930 9456 or o.watts@cqu.edu.au to register before Friday 30 August.
