Talented photographers snap up prizes in Melbourne

CQUniversity Melbourne has conducted its first student photography competition.

It was a great success and uncovered a number of talented students who obviously know how to wield a camera.

The competition, which attracted the interest of everyone who entered the campus, was organised by the Student Association, with the assistance of CQUniversity Melbourne Campus. It comprised three heats, each with a different theme, and was judged by the students themselves by way of voting.

The first heat of the competition kicked off in August and was aptly themed 'Winter'. The students had plenty of inspiration around and took some great wintery shots. The winner of this heat was campus student representative Rahul Vijay Punjabi, with his imaginatively named shot, 'The Chilly Zest'.

Heat 2 was themed 'People' and attracted some great examples of portraiture, as well as interesting interpretations of the theme with entries featuring monkeys and even coconuts. Spectator interest and voting soared, perhaps due to this heat coinciding with the Australian Federal Election. 'My Man' was the winning photo in this heat, taken by Zimei Zeng.

The third heat was themed 'Melbourne' and students entered some great city skyline views and shots of famous sights around the city. The winning shot in this category was a great photo looking into the city from the Shrine of Remembrance, titled 'Amazing Melbourne', taken by Arham Maher.

The three winning entrants all received a  voucher provided by the campus, and their photos were then entered into a final for more voting.

The outcome was clear. 'Amazing Melbourne' was the most popular photo amongst the students. Arham Mayer was impressed with his major prize - a wonderful  voucher courtesy of Camera House in Melbourne.

Thanks again to everyone who entered a photo into the competition, and also to all the students who voted. Photos from the competition can now be viewed on the Melbourne Student Association's Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/cqusa.melbourne and the Student Association is hoping to run a similar competition in Term 1 next year.
