Graduating engineers to showcase final projects

The culmination of four and a half years of hard work will be celebrated at tomorrow’s (Friday June 27) Graduating Engineers Conference, GECON 2003, at Central Queensland University Rockhampton.

GECON 2003 will be held at CQU Rockhampton, building 5, on Friday June 27 from 8am to 5pm. The conference will provide students with the opportunity to showcase their talents to their peers, industry leaders, family, potential employers and the wider Central Queensland community.

PhotoID:792 Final year projects of the Bachelor of Engineering students will be displayed through a collection of posters accompanied by oral presentations. Some of the projects to be showcased include a wheelie bin weigher, grey water reuse for dust suppression, the design of a pedestrian and cycleway bridge over Frenchman’s Creek, alternative surfboard materials, design and manufacture, and the Yeppoon Main Beach restoration.

Although the graduating engineers have studied at Rockhampton in their final years, many of the students began their degrees at CQU Gladstone and Mackay, and many have worked full-time at locations from Cairns to Brisbane as part of the Bachelor of Engineering Co-op program’s six-month work placements.

The conference is open to all members of the community, providing an opportunity to learn more about engineering and witness the high standard of CQU engineering graduates. The day should prove to be an excellent recruitment opportunity for industry representatives.

A compilation of the student’s projects will be distributed to engineering firms and potential employers throughout Central Queensland on CD-Rom.

PhotoID:793 This year the conference will also incorporate the James Goldston Faculty of Engineering & Physical Systems’ Prizes & Awards Ceremony.

The celebrations will continue with the Conference Dinner at the Rockhampton Heritage Village. Students will share their evening with industry representatives and guest speaker Greg Hargrave, Chief Operating Officer of Skilled Engineering.
