School groundsman graduates with teaching degree

A former school groundsman will celebrate his career move into school teaching when he graduates with a Bachelor of Learning Management degree from Central Queensland University Noosa this week.

Peter McGeechan has had some interesting jobs over the years including landscaping and diesel fitting, although more recently he has worked as a groundsman at Tewantin State School, Noosa.

PhotoID:1921 “It was while I was working as a groundsman that I began working with children in gardening and guitar groups and enjoyed the interaction with the kids.

“I always liked the idea of teaching, but wasn’t sure if I would be able to cope with uni.”.

Mr McGeechan began his teaching qualifications at QUT doing a Bachelor of Education, but later transferred into the Bachelor of Learning Management degree at CQU Noosa at Pomona, after recognising the benefits of the BLM and the convenience of the location.

“The CQU degree offered me lectures by experienced teachers and lots of pracs.”.

Mr McGeechan is still employed by Tewantin State School, but these days he spends his time teaching year two children.

“I have 20 students, 14 boys and 6 girls. I am having a great time with the class – they are a really nice bunch of kids.”.

Mr McGeechan’s graduation means a lot to many people including his partner Naomi who has been so supportive over the past four years and his father who is particularly proud that he ‘stuck it out’.

“I would like to thank the staff at Tewantin State Sschool for their help and support throughout my degree and also now that I have started work – particularly Principal Bob Grover who encouraged me all the way.”.

Noosa Shire Council Councillor Bob Abbot will be the official guest speaker at the CQU Noosa graduation ceremony this Saturday, June 11, at 1.30pm.

Staged at Australis Noosa Lakes, the graduation ceremony will commend 44 graduates on successfully completing their studies, most of which are graduating from the Bachelor of Learning Management degree which the Noosa campus specialises in.

Officiating the ceremony will be CQU Chancellor Rennie Fritschy and Vice-Chancellor John Rickard, while the closing address will be made by Tina Doe.
