Fresh views on museum concept

Earlier this year, CQUniversity partnered with the Innovative Regions Centre to encourage innovative thinking amongst some of our local schools.

The challenge was for the students to consider what a 'Museum of Central Queensland' might look like and incorporate.

Thirty-two students from four schools recently visited CQUniversity Rockhampton to display their team entries and share their ideas on the past, present and future as interpreted by them in innovative ways.

Schools competing were North Rockhampton High, Emu Park Primary, Yeppoon Primary and Parkhurst Primary.

Participants included students from various ‘gifted and talented' programs within the schools. They took up the challenge to imagine, design and build a prototype of a ‘Museum of Central Queensland'.

Due to quality and diversity of all entrants, no 'winner' was announced - instead each school was presented with a $500 voucher.

Establishing the Museum is an actual regional development project that is now being pursued. Details are via http://www.mocq.org.au/ .

Innovative Regions Facilitator (CQ) Ian Ogden said the challenge was successful beyond all expectations.

"The students researched and presented their ideas in sophisticated and creative ways. They demonstrated that innovation is a real strength in our schools and that they have the capacity to apply creative thinking to real world challenges. The standard of entries and the enthusiasm of the students and teachers made for a very special day," Mr Ogden said.

The school students were welcomed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman and enjoyed a tour of the new Engineering Precinct with Ray Kearney. Deputy VC Professor Graham Pegg, who presented prizes, said the event was 'brilliant' and pledged his support to future innovation challenges for schools.

Catherine George from the Museum of CQ committee also presented the schools with certificates of appreciation. She described the entries as 'inspirational' and said the committee would look to incorporate many of the challenge themes into the vision for a regional museum.
