It's been a huge week for CQU Bachelor of Business graduate Mark Shield, who is now a leading football (soccer) referee.
Mr Shield was in the limelight on Tuesday night when he yellow-carded David Beckham and also awarded the free kick which turned into a Beckham special in front of 80,000 fans at Telstra Stadium and a worldwide TV audience.
Only 24 hours later, he was announced as the Asian Football Confederation Referee of the Year during a glittering ceremony at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney overnight.
Mr Shield, who officiated this year's Asian Cup final, also officiated at the World Cups of 2002 and 2006 and has won consecutive awards for A-League 'Referee of the Year'.
Once based at CQU Rockhampton in the early 1990s, he has been an international referee since 1997 (New Zealand versus Norway) and officiates regularly for Australia's national competition.
His first appointment to the national referees list was while a student at CQU (his first fitness test was conducted on the CQU oval).
Mr Shield's father is a graduate in Engineering from CQU's predecessor institution - Capricornia Institute of Advance Education.
