Camel rides, outdoor movies and a harbour cruise to welcome new students

Plans are well underway for CQU Gladstone’s Orientation celebrations in March. As well as the usual information sessions, the Gladstone campus will be welcoming their newest students with camel rides, movies by moonlight and a harbour cruise.

Over 100 new students will begin their studies at Gladstone on Tuesday February 28 and their first week will be spent getting to know university procedures and meeting their new classmates.

Orientation Week coordinator, Pam Brown said CQU staff would spend the first week making sure the new students had access to all the information that they need to know before classes started the following week.

“University will be different to anything they’ve done before and this week is about giving them the tools and knowledge they will need to succeed. It’s also going to be the last week that they can let their hair down and have some fun before the serious study begins”.

Mrs Brown said that they tried to incorporate a lot of fun into the learning experiences with students having the opportunity to win prizes for their participation in activities.

The first day will begin with a formal welcoming ceremony and will be an opportunity for the students to meet with students studying the same program.

Mrs Brown said that the activities would be of special importance to the 10 students who are moving to Gladstone from throughout the state and from NSW and Victoria.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming these new students to Gladstone and have included a special tour of the region for them,” said Mrs Brown.

Students also have the opportunity to get a little extra help with their studies can attend a series of free workshops in the week prior to Orientation Week. The workshops aim to prepare students for university study in certain areas and include Writing Skills, Mathematics, Science, Study Skills, Library Research Skills and Introductory Computing.
