Ex-miner gears up for career change

When Robert Howard hurt his back while working in an underground mine, it proved to be a moment that would change his life forever.

Previously, he worked in numerous physically demanding jobs (diesel fitting, farming etc), but now that was no longer an option.

Robert Howard (right) will begin a psychology degree in March after completing the STEPS program.
It was at this time he discovered CQUniversity's STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies) program.

STEPS is a 13-week Accelerated or a 26-week Extended/Flex/External program, designed to instill in its adult learners the skills and confidence necessary to embark on tertiary study.

Free of charge*, STEPS covers academic communication, mathematics, computing, independent learning skills, study skills and library/information literacy skills.

"STEPS gave me the basic skills needed to be able to cope with tertiary study.

"It gave me an insight into what university is all about."

Now, Robert has enrolled in a Bachelor of Psychology program which he will study externally from his home in Emerald.

"After graduating I want to be able to use my skills back in the rural community," Robert explained.

"There is such a great need for skilled professionals in psychology, sociology and welfare out of the cities."

For people interested in going to university, but think they haven't got the skills needed to succeed, Robert's advice is ‘just do it'.

"Don't give up on your dreams. Sometimes, the timing is all wrong, but don't give up."

Those interested in knowing more about STEPS should contact Jo Rosenblatt on 4982 0421.

* STEPS is offered free of tuition and textbook charges.
