Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Supervisors come up winners 

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Research) Professor Ron Davies announced the winner of this year’s Supervisor of the Year at the 2002 Postgraduate Symposium Evening on Friday 25 October. Associate Supervisor Patrick Danaher from the Faculty of Education and Creative Arts received first place. Patrick was nominated by three of his postgraduate students.

Associate Professor Russel Stonier from the Faculty of Informatics and Communication received second runner-up, followed by Associate Professor Gayle Jennings from the Faculty of Business and Law with third place. Symposium organiser Mark Walters said all nominees were on in contact with students, guidance, feedback, support, technical Assistance, aid with publications, and pastoral care.

CQU Research students nominated their supervisor and each nomination was considered by the Awards Panel to determine outstanding supervision.

“This was a very difficult task, as all nominees are more than worthy of this prestigious award,” explained Mr Walters.

Other nominees were Dr David Weedon, Dr David Moy, Dr Manicka Dhanaseker, Professor David Midmore, Associate Professor Daniela Stehlik, Dr Terry Piva, Robert ForsterLee and Professor John Dekkers.

Associate Professor Gayle Jennings also received a special award on the day by the Postgraduate Student Organisation (PSO) for “Outstanding Postgraduate Support” for her support of the PSO throughout 2002, the Postgraduate Symposium itself, organising prizes through the Faculty Associate Deans (Research), and for her support of all postgraduate students.
