Science made cool in Mackay
Published on 23 August, 2006
Science Week was kicked off at Central Queensland University (CQU) Mackay campus early this week with students from the area joining in on some fascinating workshops run by the North Queensland Science Education Centre’s (NQSEC) ‘Lab on Legs’.
The NQSEC is running hands-on science experiments based around real-life CSIRO research and students are getting the chance this week to be scientists and see what it’s like to work in this area.
Various schools from around the Mackay area have taken advantage of the programs on offer and are transporting students out to CQU this week to enjoy workshops on forensics and gene technology.
The idea is to give kids a glimpse into some of the interesting and important jobs on offer in the broad field of science.
Simone Buckley from Sarina State High school says she’s already looked into studying science further and pursuing a career in science.
“I would really like to get into marine aquatic studies and work in that field so I am taking all the science subjects I need at school,” she said, “I love it, science is cool!”.
Students from Pinnacle Primary, Mirani Primary, St Patrick’s College, Mirani State High School and Calen State High School also enjoyed the engaging and educational workshops during science week.
