Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Emmaus students build bridges to CQU

Building bridges through clouds never looked achievable to Emmaus College students until they visited 1st-year Engineering Co-ordinator Mark Steedman (pictured) last week.

Emmaus College supported the future potential of their students' interests in engineering and science by sending 13 of their Year 12s on an excursion to CQU.

PhotoID:3562 "It is great to see local schools proactively seeking information from the University. All of the students who attended participated with genuine interest," Mr Steedman said.

Of the 13 students who participated in the tour of engineering facilities and physics laboratories, 8 have put engineering at Central Queensland University as their first QTAC preference.

The remaining students identified preferences in other areas such as Biomedical Science.

Mr Steedman's presentation astounded the students, thanks to the creativity, complexity and sheer magnitude of the engineering feats depicted.

Dr Jessica Dempsey, Lecturer in Physics, also inspired the students with possibilities of interesting careers in astronomy, geophysics and research.

PhotoID:3563 Having recently finished a period at the South Pole Station in Antarctica, Dr Dempsey was able to relate her experiences and inform students about the largely unknown career paths in physics.

The students subsequently revealed that their interest in studying physics in a tertiary environment had dramatically increased.
