Campus motorists 'too fast'

Twenty-eight per cent of motorists at CQU’s Rockhampton campus are exceeding the speed limit by up to 25 km/h, a CQU Facilities Management staff Speed Awareness Program has revealed.
The startling figure of people exceeding the speed limit has brought a word of caution from Speed Awareness Program coordinator Damon Wells who said pedestrian safety was of paramount importance to the university.
“Please slow down. Pedestrian safety must come first ...speed limits on campus are enforceable,’’ he said.
“The stopping distance of 20 metres at 40km/h increases to 54 metres at 65km/h, placing emphasis on the need to adhere to the limit.” CQU Facilities Management staff monitored the speed of 547 vehicles during the campaign, with the help of a speed gun and screen showing motorists how fast they were travelling.
Mr Wells said of the 547 vehicles tested, 72 per cent were within the 40km/h speed limit.
The speed limit on campus is 40 km/h, except at the residential college where it is 25 km/h.
Meanwhile, Mr Wells is also organising a DrinkRight Awareness night at the Birdcage Bar, on Wednesday, October 1, in conjunction with the student association, police, the Main Roads Department and Queensland Health.
Males and females of different ages, weights and heights and will undergo progressive rounds of drinking and breathalyser tests to show how different individuals handle alcohol differently.
