Biologist shares knowledge with high schoolers

CQU’s entomologist (a specialist in insects) Dr Bob Newby and Senior Technical Officer in the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences Paul Graham shared their knowledge and expertise with a group of grade 11 students from Glenmore High School recently.

PhotoID:676 The students studied a range of invertebrate animals that could be found in the backyard including scorpions, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, insects, as well as plants.

They had the chance to check out some of the scientific equipment used at the University and received hands-on experience with the dissection microscopes.

Glenmore State High School science teacher Karen Carvell said the students were very impressed by the collections and displays at CQU, as well as the equipment accessible to the students.

“I am sure some have been inspired towards a career in biology and definitely would consider their local Central Queensland University, as a worthwhile place to undertake their study,” Ms Carvell said.

The School of Biological and Environmental Sciences offers degrees in Biological Science, Aquatic Resource Management and Marine Ecology.
