Place at College the clincher for new students

Gladstone's Sonya Kennedy, Barcaldine's Paige Hauff and Rockhampton's Daniel Kovac started their relationship with CQUniversity while still at school and got a feel for the Rockhampton Campus through an Access and Support Program.

The recent school leavers were encouraged to apply for an Accommodation Scholarship, which enables them to stay at Capricornia College for the duration of their degree.

All of them said that this support was the clincher in their decision to enrol and study with CQUniversity.

Paige's family run a hotel in Barcaldine but she's enjoying city life. Apart from her Nursing studies, she's joined up for indoor netball and has been frequenting the gym in the sports centre on campus.

"I knew one person at College from Barcaldine but I've since made plenty of friends, including some American exchange students."

"I want to travel after my degree and so it's handy that Nursing is a transportable skill," she said.

Sonya has come from Gladstone and is looking forward to getting a grounding in general Nursing before considering specialities such as paediatrics or mental health.

She is close enough to home for regular visits but is also starting to find things to do around Rockhampton on her weekends.

Meanwhile, recent Glenmore High graduate Daniel appreciated the scholarship as it enabled him to stay at his chosen University, despite his parents moving to New South Wales.

"With the extra support it's meant I can concentrate on my dual degree studies in Accountancy and Business and not worry about extra part-time work," he said.

"I've made some early links to Price Waterhouse in Brisbane and it's my goal to work for a big accountancy firm."

Daniel says he is enjoying campus life, especially the access to a swimming pool.
