Neuenfeldt helps preserve Rotuma Island songs

CQU Associate Professor Karl Neuenfeldt has helped preserve traditional songs from Rotuma Island, a Fijian dependency.
Dr Neuenfeldt helped record a CD entitled 'Rotuman Hymns and Chants', working in collaboration with the island's Churchwood Chapel Choir and the Oceania Centre for Arts and Culture.
The songs on the CD depict the experiences of Rotuma islanders who went to the Torres Strait in the late 1800s, in search of opportunities in the pearling industry.
The Rotuma project complements Dr Neuenfeldt's work recording songs by former Torres Strait pearler Seaman Dan.
The new CD is available from the Oceania Centre for Arts and Culture at the University of the Southern Pacific (USP) in Suva.
