Beauty career inspires biomedical science studies

How many beauty therapists have a degree in science?.

A Central Queensland University graduate, based in Bundaberg, believes there should be more therapists like her following this pathway considering the common use of high-tech, medical grade equipment in skin care clinics.

Patricia Meister has just graduated with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science with distinction (March 11, 2006) and has recently partnered with a medical practitioner. Together they have established Coral Coast Laser Hair Removal and Skin Care Clinic which is situated in Bundaberg.

PhotoID:2995 “My chosen career is a somewhat unusual one; in fact I may be the first beauty therapist in the country with a Biomedical Science degree,” Ms Meister said.

“I think there should be more therapists increasing their scientific knowledge and undertaking tertiary education considering the medical grade equipment that is now being used in the industry and the damage that can be done with incorrect usage.

“I believe there needs to be an understanding of scientific principles, quality control, human physiology and evidence based research.”.

Ms Meister completed a degree in Social Studies (Hons) back in 1976 from the Sydney University and then went on to study beauty therapy, massage therapy, electrolysis, nutrition and paramedical laser therapy.

Over the years that followed it became obvious that the industry was progressing towards a much more scientific focus. Liaising with the medical profession has become an important part of the work involved in the paramedical arena.

Patricia decided it was time to learn more about the science behind the techniques she practiced and gain relevant clinical skills to enhance the quality of her work.

The Biomedical Science degree has led Ms Meister into the area of laser hair removal and photorejuvenation.

“I was able to form a company with a local doctor who was impressed with my background in science.

“This has been a worthwhile business decision both personally and financially, and has led me into an area which has a scientific focus and requires communication with the medical profession on their level.”.

Ms Meister now aims to design training courses for the use of pulsed light and laser systems and will aim to complete a masters degree in nutrition in the future.

“Learning and the quest for knowledge has been a big part of my life to date, and will continue to be a major part of it.”
