Yoga now option at campus Sacred Garden

STORY by Monika Singh and PHOTO by Stephen LIN.

As the weather gets cooler, we need to get more active to keep us warm and healthy.

Here on Rockhampton campus, we have the right exercise for you at the Sacred Garden.

PhotoID:2930 Mahesh Khurana, CQU’s newly-enrolled Master of Accounting student, is full of talent.

Mahesh is talented in areas including the famous Punjabi dance (bhangra), pottery and painting.

He is a gold medallist in dancing at national level and a gold medallist in Paranayam (breathing cycle) yoga at state level in India.

Mahesh describes yoga as the experience of unity, harmony and oneness - an experience that incorporates body, mind, emotions and spirit.

He has started teaching from the very basic breathing system which is known as Pranayama. The seven breathing steps are a good spot for beginners to start this traditional holistic exercise.

There are lots of benefits of doing yoga. It keeps a person healthy, increases will power, improves blood circulation, helps prevent disease and helps in gaining mental peace.

Mahesh says if you do it regularly you will feel the difference in your daily life in a week’s time. Participants have been really excited with something new they got to learn and describe it as a wonderful experience.

Classes run for an hour on Friday afternoons from 5.30pm till 6.30pm at the University Sacred Garden. The first four classes are free.

For Mehesh, yoga is a way to connect with his traditional culture, remain active and contribute to the multicultural flavours of Rockhampton.
