Interactive open day planned

Continuing last year's theme of supporting the education of seniors in the area of information technology, CQU’s Faculty of Business & Law will have a number of exciting activities during the Central Queensland Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day this Sunday.

Faculty Marketing Manager, Darryl Parker said the focus of the Faculty's Internet and Internet Banking Sessions are to entertain and educate senior citizens in the use of the Internet and particularly Internet banking.

"We understand that this can be an area of difficulty for many people including seniors, so with a little support we are hoping to make this process a lot easier,” he said.

“Our computer lab at building 34, room G.17, will be set up for access to the Internet and there will be an introduction to programs for novices to learn firstly how to use a computer.

“A presentation will be delivered using slides and dummy bank accounts to demonstrate Internet banking.

Running for one hour, presentations will be held twice during the day.

"Participants will be able to send an email to a staff member sitting in another room, then receive a standard reply," Mr Parker said.

Mr Parker said the Faculty of Business & Law has also been participating in a very interesting study of the music industry throughout the year and is interested in sharing its findings with the public.

"At the Open Day, we are aiming to promote CQU as an ideal place for graduates interested in the diverse range of career options such as those included in the music and entertainment industries to begin their study.

Interested people will be able to learn about the music industry using the Internet and more importantly how a career as a graduate manager in this industry can begin with a Bachelor of Business degree specialising in management, marketing and other disciplines," he said.

Two computers will be operating from 11am to 2pm, with one playing music using the MP3 format and the other a range of websites displaying music research data and music industry newsletters.

Advice will also be given on how students can take elective assignments focusing on the music industry itself.

Mr Parker said in the past some students and their parents had the wrong impression that business graduates end up doing a limited range of jobs like Store Managers or doing someone else's tax returns.

"We want them to know that there are also exciting jobs for them in such industries as music, sports, the media and other entertainment, both as an employee and as entrepreneurial owners and managers, he said.
