As well as showcasing the region’s multicultural diversity, the CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day allows the community to get to know their regional university. All faculties will be open to the public with informative and interactive displays operating.

The Faculty of Informatics and Communication will be hosting a virtual reality games station where participants could go into the draw to win a Playstation 2. The faculty will operate an Internet cafi where you can learn how to use email and the Internet while treating yourself to a cuppa and cake.

The Faculty will also be holding pre-selection heats for the Kmart Plaza Newsreader of the Year competition. Winners will go into the semi-finals staged at Kmart Plaza later this month.

First year students from the School of Social Work have prepared an interactive display, which offers the community the chance to explore the role of social workers.

These social workers-in-training will encourage participation in activities including a dart game and a pick-a-word lolly jar. The display embraces a multicultural theme and aims to share education with the community about the purpose, values, knowledge and skills of social work in Australia today.

The CQU Office of Research will provide information about the variety of research projects currently underway at the University, while also capturing the young audience with helium balloons, chocolate tree frogs and a display of Australian native animal posters produced by year one students for a poster competition. Children can also learn how to locate a calling frog and learn to create a frog friendly garden.

The School of Health and Human Performance will provide information about how to make a career out of a passion for sport. The school will showcase their degrees and industry courses such as Level 1 Sports Trainer and Level 1 Strength & Conditioning. On display will be examples of students’ work including research projects.

The University’s Division of Teaching and Learning will be providing information about their Communications Learning Centre, the Maths Learning Centre and the STEPS program – the preparatory program for university education for mature age students. STEPS is an opportunity to kickstart a career for those members of the community who may have dreamt of a university education, but don’t know where to begin.

These open day activities and many more are sure to entertain you at this year’s CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day this Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

The CQ Multicultural Fair is a joint initiative of CQU and ABC Capricornia, with support from The Morning Bulletin and the Rockhampton City Council.

Look out for your CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day program inserted in this Friday’s The Morning Bulletin and Central Queensland News and in Thursday’s Central Telegraph.
