Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Warm reception for icy topic at Bundaberg 

CQU Bundaberg recently (Aug 9) hosted 2006 Queensland Professional Engineer Of The Year David Starr, who addressed 30 members of the Burnett Local Group of Engineers Australia.

Mr Starr spoke on 'Leadership lessons from Shackleton's Endurance Antarctic Expedition', relating examples from the expedition to the building and leading of teams in the workplace.

The presentation used copies of the images and film footage taken on the expedition to demonstrate the challenges faced by Shackleton and his men.

Burnett Local Group Chairman Desirae Kirby, a CQU staff member, said that "we were delighted to host a speaker of Mr Starr's calibre at CQU".

"Our members thoroughly enjoyed his inspiring and thought-provoking presentation".

Mr Starr is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with Golder Associates in Brisbane. He has 35 years' experience in a range of international projects and is currently working on the Brisbane North-South Bypass tunnel.

Also in attendance at the evening were some prospective engineering students from Shalom College. The students came along to speak about their experiences at a recent Engineering Link program.
