The Hunt for ABC Television's Rocky past

The history of ABC television in Rockhampton is being rediscovered through a Central Queensland University research project.

Researcher Christina Hunt, from CQU’s Visual New Media Research Group, has launched 'Unearthing the ABC’s Rocky Past: The demise of ABC Television in Rockhampton'.

The project seeks to highlight the contribution and significance of the establishment of ABC television in Rockhampton from 1963 – 1985, and to highlight its value as an historical document of Rockhampton and the Central Queensland region’s society and culture.

“The objective of the study is to understand and acknowledge the contribution of ABC Rockhampton Television in representing and reflecting regional identity, diversity, and society, both town and country,” Ms Hunt explained.

“Research into the existence or otherwise of any 16mm film footage/video recordings from 1963 - 1985 is ongoing. I’m also interested in finding out what happened to the early footage”.

Still in the data collection and interviewing stages, research has benefited from the kind assistance of Ross Quinn (formerly of ABC Rockhampton, now with CQU), Martin Powley (ABC Rockhampton) and Mike Tregaskis (ABC Rockhampton).

In addition, former ABC Rockhampton Television staff Bruce Black (cameraman), Milton Moorehead (management), and Barbara Grant (presenter) have contributed to the story from their personal perspective via interviews.

Any other former ABC Rockhampton Television staff interested in being involved by telling their stories can contact Christina on 4923 2529.
