CQU Accounting Student Scores Job with Brisbane Firm

Alice McKavanagh never thought she would land a job so quickly, especially after her first interview.

The 21-year-old student, who has just finished a double degree in Business and Arts at Central Queensland University Rockhampton, could not believe her luck when she scored a job with one of Brisbane’s accounting firms earlier this year.

PhotoID:23 Approximately 80 applications were submitted for the job at the chartered accounting firm, Ham & Partners, with 6 selected for interviews, Alice being one of them.

“I just can’t believe my luck.

“I was the last to be interviewed – and the following day I received a phone call from the Firm telling me I was chosen for the job,” a proud and excited Alice says.

Alice will soon leave her hometown, Yeppoon, to move to Brisbane, and says she intends to complete a chartered accountancy program in the near future.

“This is the end of this degree – but certainly not the end of my study,” says Alice.

During her study, Alice took part in the University’s QANTAS Work Experience Program, which she believes helped her acquire the necessary business and interpersonal skills that she impressed upon the Firm during her interview.

QANTAS offers students, like Alice, studying business, information technology and communications and arts degrees, the opportunity to supplement their skills learnt at CQU with a practical work placement.

Alice says she enjoyed the relaxed nature of CQU “except for exam time – when it was not so relaxed.” Alice will graduate from CQU in June this year, gaining a Bachelor of Business (Accounting)/Bachelor of Arts (Psychology).
