"The spirit of Relay For Life is about working together as a community to Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back.
"This year's Relay will continue to raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) in its vital work to support Queenslanders affected by cancer, including many thousands of Queenslanders who have been badly affected by recent floods.
"Funds raised at Relay go to important services such as the Cancer Council Helpline, which is now helping cancer patients with coping after the floods."
Ms Gee said the floods had strengthened community connections, highlighting the important services provided by organisations such as CCQ.
"CCQ responded rapidly to the flood emergency and is now implementing a number of actions to assist with the recovery process.
"During the crisis the Cancer Council provided accommodation for a special flood assistance team at its Central Queensland Lodge in Rockhampton, while continuing to provide accommodation for a number of cancer patients who couldn't return home to their regional towns.
"In the wake of the floods, the contribution of Relay For Life participants has never been so important."
Ms Gee said community events such as Rockhampton Relay For Life would be critical to enhancing and developing the Cancer Council's capacity to support all Queenslanders affected by cancer this year.
"With the support of our local community, we hope to make 2011 the biggest year in the history of Relay For Life, bringing the people of Rocky together to mark CCQ's 50th Anniversary.
"On behalf of the Rockhampton Relay For Life committee, I'd like to thank in advance our Relay teams and participants for supporting CCQ's vital work and for so generously dedicating their time and energy to the 2011 event.
"We hope the spirit of Relay For Life provides the Rockhampton community with inspiration to Celebrate survival, Remember those lost, and also Fight Back as a community."
The Rockhampton event will be held on the weekend of May 21-22 at CQUniversity's sports fields.
