QREX will be held in Rockhampton, Queensland, from 20 - 24 July 2009.

As part of a 4-month work placement, Madison Black, Ashlee Hansen and Justine Daniels will develop their professional skills as well as build relationships with the Central Queensland community and the event's sponsors.

Under the guidance of the QREX management team, the students will take on sponsorship, marketing and public relations projects that will see them put into practice the skills and theories they have been learning throughout their Professional Communication degrees.

CQUniversity student supervisor Kate Ames and QREX Events Organiser Ellie Traynor agree that it's a highly beneficial arrangement for the students as well as for the event.

"Our students work with real clients, and get to apply the skills they have learned in their degrees so far, and at the same time, they're providing some valuable help to a local organisation," said Ms Ames.

Ms Traynor said, "As a major community event, QREX relies on the support of our sponsors and supporters to ensure its success."

"The key objective of QREX is to strengthen Central Queensland's position as a major Queensland resources centre.

"In developing the professional skills of local students, QREX and CQUniversity are investing in the future workforce of Central Queensland, ensuring that students are graduating not only with a degree but with occupational experience, an excellent skills base and an understanding of how businesses operate," said Ms Traynor.

"The skills the students will learn from this placement will flow on to their future careers."

As part of the project, the students will work with international companies Reed Exhibitions, the world's largest exhibitions organizer, and Spitfire Communications, a specialist marketing and communications company.

"The communication skills and time management I've already learned from this placement will be of great benefit to my career," said placement student, Ashlee Hansen.

The students are enrolled in CQUniversity Australia's Bachelor of Professional Communication degree, which places a strong focus on industry accreditation through industry placements and work experience programs, such as the one with QREX.

The students will focus on media writing, marketing, research, networking and team building skills, as well as organisational, communication and time management development.
