Rocky exhibition showcases region's Maltese heritage

Central Queensland’s Maltese community will continue to be showcased at a unique photographic exhibition at the Central Queensland University library in Rockhampton until Tuesday September 9.

PhotoID:1101 ‘Our Shared Heritage: A Maltese Photographic Exhibition 1883 – 1940’ officially opened on Saturday and was a feature of the CQ Multicultural Fair on Sunday with up to 3200 viewing the pieces.

The exhibition showcases photographs of Maltese migrant families from the Mackay district during the period 1883 and 1940. The exhibition consists of 46 photographs and 105 family charts documenting the lives of Maltese migrants who settled in the Mackay region.

Accompanying the exhibition is a display of unusual Maltese tools along with a display of memorabilia and special objects belonging to Rockhampton’s Maltese families.

The exhibition has been funded by the Maltese community and created by curators Carmel Baretta and Laraine Schembri from Mackay. The curators have already taken the exhibition to all capital cities in Australia and to Malta.

The curators hosted a successful floorwalk of the exhibition for a group of historical and genealogical societies on Monday evening.

The ‘Our Shared Heritage’ Rockhampton exhibition has been sponsored by Festivals Australia.
