Nurses of future could all be 'informaticians'

It is possible to envision a time when all nurses are considered to be 'informaticians' - or information/IT specialists.

That is according to CQU Master of Informatics candidate Suzanne Craig, who works in Toronto (Canada) as a change management consultant to healthcare organisations introducing enterprise-wide technological processes.

PhotoID:1777 Ms Craig started her career in critical care nursing, where technology is an integral part of nursing pratice.

She also worked on clinical applications of patient monitoring systems and development of electronic patient records before becoming a consultant.

"Technology is becoming more and more prevalent in every facet of nursing practice, and is being heralded as a method of improving communications and patient safety," she said.

"Few studies have examined how well technology is adopted into clinical practice, or how it impacts on care delivery despite the large amounts of government funds being diverted to healthcare information management strategies.".
