State Govt fosters collaborative approach to 'widening participation'

The State Government is fostering a collaborative approach between universities, schools and TAFEs, to raise interest in tertiary study across communities lacking a history of participation at a tertiary level.
That's according to Queensland's Office of Higher Education Executive Director Ian Kimber, who visited CQUniversity to help launch its expanded Outreach program this week (Tuesday May 25)
Mr Kimber said the State Government has a target for 75% of the State's adult population to hold tertiary qualifications by 2020 "and these kinds of Outreach programs are going to be very important in achieving these targets".
"We don't want to just achieve a target, we want to achieve a parity across the population ... we want to mirror the wider population in terms of participation in higher education."
Meanwhile, Mary McLeod from CQUniversity's Student Centres Directorate said the launch was a commitment to schools and other stakeholders that the University would continue to be involved "for the long haul".
"This is our 14th year of residential schools for LSES students, including some Indigenous students. We've been patted on the back but we aware we still have lots to learn," she said.
"The time has now come to find a framework for what we have been doing as we expand our Outreach team."
Ms McLeod said initiatives were likely to include inspirational speakers for primary schools and 'peer pals' for Years 8-9 students.
