About 80 per cent of the students enrolled in pre-tertiary studies at Central Queensland University, Mackay, received certificates of recognition at a completion ceremony on Friday evening.
Co-ordinator Lyn Forbes-Smith said the determination shown by most STEPS students provided an encouraging foundation for developing successful tertiary studies. STEPS is the Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) program, which is designed to equip adults over 21 years with the skills required to undertake tertiary studies.
“Each year I am amazed by the strong interest shown in following through with tertiary pursuits,” she said.
“Some of the students used the program to upgrade their skills and education as they may have left school in Year 10, yet were determined to complete university studies.” STEPS 1997 student Debbie Thorpe addressed the ceremony and reflected on her university experiences.
She received numerous academic awards while studying for a Bachelor of Education at CQU. She now teaches Year 2/3 at Bucasia State School.
