Melbourne's iconic art-house theatre, the Lumiere, will open again this Thursday night - not for an edgy world movie, but for an inaugural lecture hosted by Central Queensland University (CQU) Melbourne and compered by former television journalist Jo Pearson.

Liquid-crystal displays have replaced the movie screens and there are now 181 cushioned chairs instead of the old hard theatre seats.

The theatre, transformed by the University into state-of-the-art lecture facilities, complements the University's full-service CBD campus on Lonsdale Street which serves more than 2000 students.

"The Lumiere was, in a sense, a place of learning and discovery for Melbourne when it was an art-house theatre, but accounting and finance lectures can be just as engaging," said CQU Melbourne's Associate Professor Ken Bruce.

Dr Sheik F. Rahman, a Professor of Accounting at CQU will make a presentation to invited guests on the underpinnings of Accounting and the challenges facing the profession.

Professor Rahman, who joined CQU in 2007, previously held positions of Associate Professor and Senior Lecture at Swinburne and Monash Universities, respectively.

An expert-panel discussion will follow the lecture.

CQU will also announce its new - Intercultural Education Research Institute (IERI), a flagship research centre which will address a wide range of international pedagogical issues faced by the higher education sector, including teaching, curriculum and assessment.

The Director of the Institute, Professor Paul Rodan, will be based at the Melbourne campus and brings to this position a breadth of knowledge and experience in contemporary issues in Education.

"International education brings to Melbourne a wealth of cultural and skills diversity. As one of the most experienced educators of international students in Melbourne, CQU has an appreciation for and unique perspective on the challenges faced by the sector. The research we conduct will contribute to a better understanding of international students and will shape the educational experience we offer them," said Professor Rodan.
