Students clown around with important safety message

CQUniversity Bachelor of Theatre students have visited 18 primary schools in the Mackay region, to send an important safety message in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.

The performances took place at schools over a one-week period from May 20 - 27.

'PhotoID:14700Safety Circus' is a performing arts and musical act that has been written by Bachelor of Theatre Honours student Hannah Barn, with the music composed by Head of the Theatre Program at CQUniversity, Dr Judith Brown.

The inaugural project is a joint collaboration between CQUniversity students and the Mackay Police Crime Prevention Unit, with themes around child protection, safety on bikes, scooters and skateboards and bullying.

Dr Brown said the aim was to send clear safety messages to youngsters, in a fun and relaxed environment.

"The CQUniversity students used a mix of theatre skills including singing, dancing and acting to engage with young children and provide them with a clear message about safety in their community," Dr Brown said.

"We hope to make this an annual production as we continue our strong partnership with the Queensland Police Service and local schools."
