Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Students get to the heart of health 

CQU Mackay Campus celebrated National Heart Week with a visit from specialists in the field.

Fiona Lynch, Dietician; Jane O’Shannessy, Cardiac Rehabilitation Officer at the Mater, and Medical Student Corinne Ryan, advised CQU staff and students on the importance of preventing heart disease.

PhotoID:2147 Weight, blood sugar levels and blood pressure data were collected and a risk assessment sheet was completed by each attendee to assess associated risk factors with heart disease.

“This is about creating awareness about heart disease within the younger population in order to prevent complications down the track”.

“One in five adults has heart disease and it is the number one killer in Australia”. “Exercise, not smoking and healthier eating are three key preventive measures that anyone can apply to good heart health”, Jane O’Shannessy said.
