Flood victims may have to refocus or even rebuild their lives

Central Queensland flood victims may have to refocus or even rebuild their lives from the ground up. The good news is that help is at hand and it may be free of charge, thanks to specially funded clinical places available at CQUniversity's new Psychology Wellness Centre, which is an intern training and research centre.

Centre Director Dr Will Reimer said funding from the University and The Rotary Club of Rockhampton meant that people seeking help after the floods could receive free sessions with registered psychologists and provisionally registered psychologists under registered psychologist supervision.

which raises funds for projects including flood victim support.

"The initial stage for flood victims is organising food, clothing and shelter but months down the track they may still need help to refocus their lives or even to rebuild their lives," Dr Reimer said.

"We can help people understand how they can be more resilient if they are able to look forward rather than looking back on what they lost."

The Psychology Wellness Centre opened in the latter half of 2010 and offers help with everything from couples counseling and parenting advice to anger management and therapy for stress, anxiety and depression.

A large range of therapy, consultation and assessment services are available at a low cost and the initial assessments are free of charge.

Bookings can be made via wellnesscentre@cqu.edu.au or (07) 4923 2233 or via the Centre website www.cqu.edu.au/wellnesscentre .

The Centre is the first of its type available in the region and is one of the most technologically advanced in Australia.

Technical advances mean that the Clinical Psychology Interns* providing services can be supervised in real-time during sessions, with live feedback from experienced Clinical Psychologists. The technology will even enable specialists to provide feedback and advice from interstate or overseas.

Wellness Centre Director Dr Will Reimer said people were encouraged to get help with putting their life back together after the floods, or with other problems in life.

"If you or someone you care about is having difficulty coping with life then contact the centre," he said.

* The Psychology Wellness Centre supports CQUniversity's Master of Clinical Psychology program.

This program of study has been conditionally accredited by the Australian Psychological Society and supports the Society's requirements for Psychologists in training to qualify as a full membership of the professional body.

All students who enter the Master's program have completed a four-year Bachelor of Psychology degree, which provides them with the foundation they need to focus on the needs of a client. The role of the Master's program and the Wellness Centre is to provide students with real-life experience in the field of psychology under the supervision of professionals.
