Bundy teen juggles opportunities, thanks to campus program

Erwan LeLagadec is a very busy young man.  At the tender age of 16, he is attending high school and completing a school-based traineeship with TAFE.

In addition, he has just completed one subject at CQUniversity Australia towards a Bachelor of Information Technology. If that isn't enough, he also has a paid job in his field of study, all possible under the University's Get SET Program.

CQUniversity Bundaberg Campus Academic Manager Margaret Flanders, Catalyst Media General Manager Steve Low, Bundaberg State High School and Erwan and his family are in a unique partnership under the Get SET Program.

This program can be tailored to meet the individual needs of employers, students, CQUniversity and the school, which results in a higher rate of success for all participants.

In Erwan's case, Bundaberg High teacher and IT Department Head Peter Edwards, in conjunction with other teachers, has altered Erwan's school timetable so he can participate in this program to obtain the best possible outcome. The University has also altered its program to support Erwan.

Catalyst Media's Mr Low says there is no need for our young people to be rushing off to Brisbane with this perception of opportunity.

"This program is about keeping the smart and passionate young people in our regional areas,' he said.

"We are trying to balance equipping Erwan with the necessary confidence, communication and social skills and getting him to perform commercial work for the business."

Mr Low and Erwan have a memorandum of understanding that, as much as Erwan loves programming with modern equipment and software at work, he also needs to keep up with his studies and his school work.

With his mum Danielle, his biggest fan, by his side, as well as support from the school and campus, Erwan is proof that the program is working and he loves it.

Catalyst Media is developing flexible hours and work for Erwan, the school is providing a pathway to employment and a good education and CQUniversity is helping Erwan progress a degree via the SUN (Start Uni Now) program.

With Erwan on track in his initial tertiary study, he is set for guaranteed entry into any CQUniversity undergraduate degree which relates to the SUN course.

For Erwan's family the benefits are tremendous. Erwan can remain in the Bundaberg region whilst receiving his senior education, gaining paid training in his chosen career of information technology programming and starting his university degree.
