Trivial - not a word generally associated with prostate cancer

A major fundraiser in November enlists men to grow a moustache, all to raise money for medical research.

Of late, funds raised have been directed to advancing prostate cancer research... PhotoID:8021, Cyrus Bharda

Just as this insidious malady can strike men from all walks of life, so we’re seeing men from a great diversity of professions involving themselves and friends in the fundraising effort.

One such young man, at 32 years of age, is Analyst/Developer – Information Systems at CQUniversity, Cyrus Bhada.

Prostate cancer took his grandfathers and, said Cyrus, “I’m genetically pre-disposed, so I’ve decided to be pro-active and do something, for my personal well-being, and also for others.” He added that a very good friend was lost to the disease at just 42 years of age, which has added impetus to his fundraising efforts.

Cyrus is buoyed by the positive results coming from advances in understanding of the role of prostate-specific antigen, PSA levels, revealed by blood tests, as well as the research on a simple urine analysis test. These methods hold promise as they’re not as invasive as the standard digital examination, which has been a major factor in discouraging males from so much as talking about prostate cancer.

To put a positive spin on the fundraising effort, Cyrus has been joined by workmates and acquaintances in arranging a trivia evening for staff and students at CQUniversity.

Organised for Friday November 27 in building 32 LG15, it starts at 6pm. Tickets and further information available by calling extension 2442, email to c.bharda@cqu.edu.au or visiting http://au.movember.com/mospace/4316
