Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Uni showcases its reef fisheries research projects 

Recreational and commercial fishers and other interested people are welcome at a free forum showcasing CQU’s reef fisheries research projects.

The forum will be held from 7pm-9pm on Thursday, August 4, at CQU Rockhampton Building 6 Room G.03, with supper provided.

The forum will be interactive and will include the chance to visit the CQU Fisheries DNA Laboratory.

Participants will learn:.

how fishers can become involved in contributing fin clip samples and other materials for DNA population studies.

how fish can be aged.

how analysis of fish ear bones can reveal the fish’s life history.

how DNA sequencing studies can tell whether reef fish form large interbreeding populations along the entire reef or whether distinct sub-populations are evident.

how planktonic fish larvae can be captured following spawning events and identified by DNA barcoding.

and how the deep sea nautilus can be captured and studied.
