Bioinformatics now offered in Bundaberg

Central Queensland University Bundaberg will help combat the global shortage of information scientists and software engineers when it introduces a new IT program next year.

CQU Bundaberg has introduced the Bachelor of Information Technology (Bioinformatics) into its 2006 program offerings.

The program is designed for students wishing to work in the rapidly emerging field of bioinformatics.

It produces information scientists and software engineers who can contribute to cross-discipline teams making discoveries in the field of biotechnology.

The program requires students to study IT as well as science courses including chemistry, molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology commercialisation.

“A number of sources have indicated that Australia, like the rest of the world, is seeing a shortage of people working in bioinformatics, and CQU is now offering people with an interest in IT the chance to compete for these attractive positions currently available in bioinformatics,” Sub Dean for the Faculty of Informatics and Communication in Bundaberg, Margaret Flanders explained.

“This new CQU program offers graduates great opportunities for excellent salaries and travel. As bioinformatics specialists are in demand world-wide, graduates will have the opportunity to work just about anywhere in the world.”.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Bioinformatics) is a 3-year, full-time (or 6-year, part-time) degree offered both on-campus or via distance learning. The first year of study is available on-campus at Bundaberg campus, while completion of the degree is available on campus in Rockhampton or via distance education.
