Gladstone community gets a taste of sociology

Participants enrolled in an introductory sociology course attended their first class this week at Central Queensland University Gladstone campus.

CQU Foundation Officer, Fay Owens said the sociology class had been developed with the aim of giving local community members an insight into sociology studies.

PhotoID:1754 “The program will run for six weeks and is free to anyone with an interest in sociology, the study of the development, structure and functioning of human society with a focus on the Australian context.”.

The course will cover six topics that are covered in one of CQU’s first-year courses, Australian Society.

The participants will be learning about citizenship and immigration, consumption and health, crime and media.

CQU Gladstone campus support officer and tutor for the program, Pam Brown said the first lesson went extremely well.

“The group were keen participators in discussion and shared openly their own history with our student facilitators who have already studied the full course as part of their Bachelor of Arts Degree Program at CQU Gladstone.

“Sociology forms a core plan or major in CQU’s Bachelor of Arts and is an essential field of expertise for anyone seeking employment in social welfare, the police force, human services, teaching and general education work, allied health and community and environmental development,”’ Mrs Brown said.

There is no assessment involved in the program which is purely for enjoyment.

The class is made up of people from all walks of life and interested people do not need an academic background to attend.

The program will continue for the next five Thursdays from 9.30am – 11.30am and anyone interested should phone 4970 7277 to find out more.
