"The purpose of these awards is to appreciate the efforts of supervisors who are readily available to research students, their timely and appropriate responses to the students, their value to the research community and their cooperation to promote a research culture at CQU," Sohail said.

"We also encourage the research candidates who complete research to high standard, take an active part in the research culture of CQU and who raise the research profile of our University."

Mr Qureshi said the PRSC had received lots of quality nominations and it was extremely difficult to decide the winners. He encouraged those not successful this year to try again next time.

Addressing the students present, Professor Kyd said research supervisors "will remain an important person in your life right into the future".

"They are one of your first official mentors in many cases and the mentorship they provide in addition to the intellectual guidance is a very important part of shaping you as a professional."

Professor Kyd foreshadowed enhanced training programs in 2008 to ensure continued quality in the supervisory relationships.
