Surrounding herself with books and literature since leaving high school, it's no wonder Kristin Hannaford has been drawn to the poetic word.

She's worked in bookshops, libraries, research and as a literature tutor, all of which has driven her to put pen to paper and scribe her own style of verse.

And now she also hopes to impart her love of writing to teenagers by becoming a teacher. She is currently enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching degree at Central Queensland University and hopes to begin a career in English and Drama teaching.

She started writing poetry in her teens, however more seriously about 10 years ago when her work began getting published. Her first collection titled Inhale was included in a book called Swelter published in 2003 by Interactive Press.

Kristin enjoys blurring the boundaries between traditional forms of writing and exploring new media and performance.

"I guess the driving force behind the poetry is a love for language and its subtleties," Kristin explained.

"Poetry is a very dense genre in terms of there being many layers of interpretation and meaning. I like this, I like the ideas which resonate in poetry."

Kristin has just unearthed another book of poems which articulates the experiences of living in Central Queensland, the changing landscapes and patterns of light.

"Some of the poems were written during my stage at Varuna, a writing retreat and Eleanor Dark's old home, in the Blue Mountains last year. I grew up in the mountains, so many of the pieces are about memory, place and self. That perpetual sense of loss and discovery all at once."

Ms Hannaford will launch her book of poems titled Fragile Context at Yeppoon's Mill Gallery on Friday August 10 at 6pm. Editor of the collection Brisbane poet Ross Clark will officially launch the book which has been published by Brisbane publishers Post Pressed.

The launch follows a series of workshops and readings Ms Hannaford delivered at Longreach for the Queensland Writers Centre.
