Learning through play highlighted in Mackay

CQU Mackay education students hosting Under 8s Week activities highlighted the benefits of learning through play this week.

Children and their parents viewed educational displays at the Gordon White and City Library.

CQU Bachelor of Learning Management early childhood student Madonna Berardi enjoyed helping children learn at their own pace.

“Free play involves the children in learning in a unique way and allows children to use their own expressions in a creative manner. I find that it motivates children to learn in a fun environment and allows them to lead their own learning,” she said.

“Teachers certainly support and challenge their learning by making suggestions or giving them ideas, yet the life-like and real-life experiences are what the children enjoy the most about this teaching approach.

“Learning through play, particularly at crhche and kindergarten centres, allows the children to express themselves and it teaches them to negotiate, communicate with others and to solve problems in a variety of different ways.”.

About 40 early childhood students took part in the activities on Thursday, with material remaining on display for some time.

Under 8s Week is an initiative of the Queensland Branch of Early Childhood Australia. This year’s theme is Play the Educator.
