Jas finds fewer faces but plenty of smiles in Rockhampton

When New Delhi resident Jaskirat 'Jas' Kaur travelled from a region of millions to a Rockhampton district measured in only tens of thousands she at least had one friendly face to support her.

Her partner had already established himself as a student at Central Queensland University and Jas followed in order to further her ambition in the banking and finance industry of India.

Since her arrival at the start of last year, Jas has certainly gained plenty more friendly faces to draw on thanks to her helpfulness and enthusiasm to get involved in her new home.

Only a few months after arriving, she got involved as a volunteer with the Multicultural Fair, helping to organise the parade of nations and serving on the information tent.

"One of the most impressive things last year was that people from such a wide range of cultures have an equal chance to showcase throughout the day," she said.

"I was really impressed how people from every corner of the world came together on the day and in general Rockhampton has been very welcoming.

"Being from a metropolitan area and the capital city, New Delhi - India, I was finding some peaceful and calm place away from the fast life, where life was more relaxed; I chose Rockhampton".

Jas said she was keen to come to CQU and to Rockhampton in particular because she knew it would be a supportive setting for her studies and lifestyle, while offering the right sort of academic credentials.

Back in India she had already achieved a Bachelor degree in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and had worked for India's ICICI Bank.

Since arriving at CQU, she has worked in a range of casual administrative positions including at University Relations, Facilities Management and most recently the Population Research Laboratory.

Jas is due to complete her Masters of Business Administration (MBA) studies, specialising in finance, at the end of Term 2 in October this year.

She is pictured wearing the traditional dress, 'Punjabi Suit', of her country, particularly from the Punjab region, the region which is rich in culture.
