Donation makes a splash

CQUniversity has donated over 900 fish to help re-stock the Mt Morgan dam.

842 Silver Perch and 97 Eel-tailed Catfish were transported from the University up to Mt Morgan last week by staff members Nathan Green and Damian Byrt.

"The fish were excess stock used by the University in research work and for teaching purposes and were due to be euthanased in accordance with standard ethical practices," Nathan said.

"A better alternative was to donate the fish and in consultation with DPI Fisheries and approval by the Universities Animal Ethics Committee - it's here that Mt Morgan put up it's hand and were happy to accept the surplus fish."

Transporting the fish up the mountain was no problem and local resident and keen fisherman Ken Reid was on hand to help with the release and get a look at the fish he hopes to later catch on.

After recent rains the dam is now at full capacity and the fish will provide plenty of sporting challenges for the residents who toss a line into the dam in the future.
